The TDS module shows information about TDS (Tabular Data Stream) traffic, used for database connections with Microsoft SQL Servers. Detected connections between clients and SQL servers are shown.

Overview

TDS overview

Information about all TDS packets are shown as values and graphs to give a quick overview. Global traffic can be shown in the traffic graph to see the share of TDS on the overall traffic. A PCAP download button allows capturing that traffic.

In the section of overall TDS messages, recognized SQL Batch queries, as well as Remote Procedure Call queries and their server response messages are shown as counters and in a graph. The delay statistics between client queries and server response messages are shown as minimum, average and maximum Request-Response time values, as well as in a graph.

Connections

TDS connections common columns

All TDS connections with their client and server IPs and ports are shown together with the recognized TDS version. If the Timing toggle is activated, the start and end time, as well as the duration of the connection will be visible. The Counters toggle switches visibility of common traffic counters for total packets and bytes, traffic rate counters for packets per second and bit per second, as well as the recognized valid SQL query and response messages. The connection quality can be evaluated in two columns: the Response times toggle enables the view of TCP handshake time separated for client and server, maximum and average response times, as well as SQL query response times (time between a SQL Batch query or Remote Procedure Call request sent by the client, until the server responds). Retransmissions (in byte and as a percentage of the total traffic), missed bytes and duplicated ACK-packets are shown when the TCP Retransmissions toggle is enabled.

The following graphs are available for individual selection:

  • TDS traffic bitrate
  • TDS traffic packet rate
  • TDS SQL query response times (for both SQL Batch Queries and Remote Procedure Calls)
  • TDS SQL query and response messages

The TDS traffic of each connection can be captured using the PCAP download button.

A complex filter for the shown row values can be used to limit the shown connections to the specific needs. See Live filtering of tables for a detailed description about how to use this.
